I had a problem like this with a cat4000 network. I assume your MACs are on portfast-enabled ports. Anyway, it appeared they couldn't agree on either the zone or the cable range at certain times. I ended up configuring Appletalk on a router on that VLAN to maintain the zone and range. Note that the router didn't have appletalk on any other interface, just that one ethernet. The problem went away after doing this. HTH.
