RE: Default-route generation??

IMHO, the problem is more a misinterpretation of Doyle.

In the original quote Doyle does *not* say that redistribution is
automatic. Since this is the chapter on default routes and
redistribution is covered in the *next* chapter, it is clear that he is
merely saying that once a default route exists in the RIP routing table,
it will be automatically forwarded to other RIP routers. The same
applies to IGRP and EIGRP, although both IGRP and EIGRP will require the
"ip default-network" command (see p.756-757). Again, I think Doyle is
only saying that once the default route exists in the routing table, you
don't need an extra command such as "default information-originate" to
propagate is to other routers running the same routing protocol. I think
this is pretty close to the mark.

How to redistribute default routes and connected routes does vary among
routing protocols and even IOS version. But again, redistribution was
not the topic of that chapter or nor is it the topic of the cited
paragraph.

Doyle's chapter on redistribution (Chapter 13, "Route Filtering") is
still an excellent starting point and I did not notice any mistakes the
last time I reread it. If you find one, please post it.

Jonathan
