RE: Catalyst 4506 with Sup2 Plus & CPU utilization

Haven't actually seen a sup2 plus, but the standard sup2 switches I've seen all run at 10 - 15% all the time, even with no traffic. Although once the network gets pretty busy (enough to use 10% of the backplane (using 'sh sys')), it still won't go much about 18%. Trying to keep track of multiple spanning trees, processing CDP, BPDU, trunks, unicast mac, multicast mac groups, and channels on every single port is a lot to do.

Chuck:

Are you saying this from your personnal experience with this specific
equipment? Or only suppossing it?

Please confirm

Thank you very much for your help

That's normal. The switch uses the CPU for background processes, like CDP,
spanning tree, port status, counters, etc. Adding traffic will hardly make
that go up at all.

Hi:

We're testing some 4506 switches with Supervisor 2 PLUS and we are seing
that the cpu utilization is very next to 10% in all of them, and they are
only connected by a layer two trunk to a different 6500 each one. They
don't have any port attached to them except this trunk.

Anyone with experience with this specific hardware can confirm if this is
"normal"? The 6500's of the same environment never reaches 1% cpu, but they
have supervisor 720...
