Yeah. Basically, a L3 etherchannel is a Point-to-Point IP connection,
so you can't run STP, VTP or trunk VLANs across it.

What would you call an etherchannel that is L3 at one end and L2 at the
other? Can't happen? Well, we have some 7500s that we connect to core
6500s, and we configure an etherchannel bundle on the 7500, then give
the port-channel interface an IP address, while on the 6500 side we
simply create the bundle, and then use the port-channel interface as a
switchport (mode access) that's simply assigned to a VLAN just like any
other L2 switchport. So it's a L3 etherchannel on the 7500 side, and a
L2 etherchannel (since we're not assigning an IP address) on the 6500
side..... And it works just fine =)

Subject: Dumb Question but will ask

Hi Guys,

A stupid one but I'll ask though I think I know the answer: What is the
difference between layer2 and layer 3 etherchannel? What wont work if I
use Layer 3 Etherchannel between switches? VTP?? What is more efficient
and why?

Any input is great!

thanks

Shahid
