Here are the examples. in the rate-limit command the ios is looking for the
difference between the two configured Bc and Be, it is not looking for an
absolute value in the command.

Here is an excerpt from dqos p438:

"

The configuration requires a single rate-limit command under serial 1/0.1 on
router ISP-edge.

All the parameters are typed in the single command line: rate-limit input
96000 12000 18000

conform-action set-prec-transmit 0 exceed-action drop. The rate of 96 kbps
is listed with a

Bc of 12,000 bytes, and a Be of 6000 bytes. (Remember, the burst-excess
parameter of 18,000

is actually Bc + Be.)"

and here is a quote from here:

"Extended Burst Value

wp1000990Extended burst is BM_1011532configured by setting the extended
burst value greater than the normal burst value. Setting the extended burst
value equal to the normal burst value excludes the extended burst
capability."

Jason,

I am little confused now ? I thought the Burst Max is Bc+Be. How come Be
itself is Bc+Be.Am i not understanding this right or is the book wrong ?

The way i understand it is Bc is the max burst we can have while Be is the
excess over Bc. But total is Bc+Be. why is Be itself Bc+ Be ?? ? Have not
seen this anywhere else in the Cisco documentation.

Anyone else ..Qos Gurus ? can u please clear this confusion. The
Brian's,Scott et al ??.

Good Luck,
Kasturi.
