Brian,
With all due respect, the output you have included is not adequate
proof. Show us the output after you have rebooted and see if your VLANs
are still there.
My point is that the Catalyst IOS does not complain, at least for the
version I am running. Evidently this is true for the IOS version that
ccie2be is running also. It simply does not actually delete vlan.dat. I
know for a fact that typing 'y' will result in the IOS *retaining*
vlan.dat on the 2 switches that I work with because I do it accidentally
all the time and have to redo it and reboot again.
It's possible this behavior may be version dependent.
Jonathan

Works fine for me:
Switch#dir vlan.dat
Directory of flash:/vlan.dat
2 -rwx 616 Mar 01 1993 01:01:28 vlan.dat
15998976 bytes total (7407616 bytes free)
Switch#del vlan.dat
Delete filename [vlan.dat]?
Delete flash:vlan.dat? [confirm]y
Switch#dir vlan.dat
%Error opening flash:/vlan.dat (No such file or directory)
Switch#
