Short answer: YES!!!!

Longer answer:
If you've never taken the exam, you have no idea what
is on it. You will need an enormous amount of time on
task configuring basic, fundamental things like OSPF,
BGP, and normal interface tasks such that there is no
substitute for a home lab. That being said, you don't
need every piece for the home lab to be of use. Spend
a little money getting the basic stuff - you'll need 6
routers to make a full pod; and a backbone router.
Here's my $0.02 on specific hardware.

3 - 2501
2 - 2503
1 - 2620
1 - 4x00 w/ 2 NP-4T, 1 NP-1E

The 4x00 becomes the frame switch as well as the
injector of routes for the pod. Also there are a
number of places to buy the 60-pin crossover cables
for < $20 ea. In the above configuration you'll need
six.

Once you have the basics you can add some other things
to flesh out your pod as needed: Some kind of Catalyst
switch, think VLAN trunking as well as multicasting.
Add an ISDN simulator - lots of stuff in the archives
on which is good. You don't need ATM at all. Its
been removed from the lab, even though its still on
the written (as is Token ring and IPX).

I wouldn't ever buy the 3550. There are too many good
rental racks, and quite frankly its not a core issue.
Make sure you can bring up OSPF and BGP with your eyes
closed on your mini-pod. Then once you know what
EVERY command in those sections does; move on to pick
up the 3550.
