OSPF NULL route question

Does anybody know if Cisco changed the way it places a NULL route into the
route table via "summary address" command. I know in the past (older IOS)
when I had to advertise a locally attached interface subnet (network x.x.x.x
x.x.x.x area 0) while also advertising it via "redistribute connected
subnets" the NULL route would appear in the route table with no problem. ex:

Say I have a Router running RIP and OSPF, a serial interface with a IP
address of 172.16.1.1 with a /27 SM and I need this subnet to show up in the
route table of a neighbor router running RIP across am ethernet segment
(172.16.2.0/24). In the past I was able to turn the router into an ASBR
(redistribute connected subnets) and summarize the address to a /24 mask and
everything was cool !!
I am running 12.1 IOS and I cannot do this as long as the subnet
(172.16.1.0/27) is being advertised by OSPF via the network statement -- I
never see a external route in the OSPF database which is causing me not to
see a NULL route with the /24 mask in the route table. The only way I got
the NULL route to appear was:

1) Remove the network statement from OSPF
2) Make sure there is another interface subnet in a different OSPF area and
add a "Area 0 Range" command

Has Cisco modified the later IOS to prevent the NULL route from happening
whenever advertising the same subnet via the "network" command and
"redistributed connected" ?? Any help would be appreciated, thanks !!
