Issues between two routers and a 3550 running RIP

I am doing NMC lab 3

There are 2 routers and one switch running RIP

One router is directly connected to the switch running RIP (no issues)

The other router is connected to another 3550 which in turn is Connected via
DOT1Q trunks to the switch running RIP.

Unless I specify a neighbor on the router connected to the non-RIP switch,
RIP updates fail to make it across the switches.

Has anyone seen this before ?
