You manually create a Port-Channel when configuring a Layer-3 Etherchannel,
and the Port-Channel is automatically created for you when you configure a
Layer-2 Etherchannel. According to your link, you cannot add a layer 2 port
to a manually configured Port-Channel. So, you don't need to manually
create the Port-Channel when configuring a Layer-2 Etherchannel on a 3550
switch. You do need to make sure that you pay attention to the mode when
creating the Etherchannel.
