Phil,
I haven't used a 6506, so perhaps wait for more informed answer. Meanwhile,
my opinion is that the 7606 is a MAN/WAN router (e.g., low density ATM,
serial, MPLS) with 160Gbps throughput while the 6506 (or for about the same
price, the 6509) is a LAN switch/router (e.g., high-density GigE and
FastEthernet) with 720Gbps throughput (assuming Sup720). The 7606 will
accept 6500 modules, so you will be able to add GigE and FastE ports, but
it's purpose is MAN/WAN.
Both devices offer distributed forwarding, which may be a big feature if you
expect to have many flows. The tradeoff is that dCEF is expensive.
HTH, Kym
