I have 2 methods, the first is the same as you mentioned. I do an extended
trace, destination address 255.255.255.255, source interface is the outgoing
interface, specifying the minimum TTL to be 8 (any figure will do as long as
it is enough to get to the host) and the port number as 4000 or whatever
port you mention in your access lists. It's easy to see if you log your
debugging, though you will only get one. I suspect that you could set the
count to be 100 and max hop count also to 8 for 100 port 4000 trace's though
I never tried it.

My second method is using a UDP sender program somebody gave me, it sends a
continuous stream of UDP's on port 4000. Mail me if you want a copy - it may
take me a few days to get that to you though.

I can also confirm that the doc CD omitted a directed broadcast on the
egress interface of the last hop router.
