Sorry, but the command you suggested works on a Crescendo-type-interface
(Set/Clear) switch, such as the 6509, and will *not* work on the
Catalyst 3550.

The "spanning-tree vlan vlan-id root" command is how it's done on the
new IOS-interface-type switches. You can also set the priority on a
per-VLAN basis, with the "spanning-tree vlan vlan-id priority" command.

See the Catalyst 3550 Software Configuration Guide for a discussion of
the tradeoffs between using these two commands.
