OT: bootloader image - with and without

Hi Group,

It just occured to me, why some Cisco router series (ie 4700/7200/7500/msfc)
requires a bootloader file and some doesnt (2500/2600/3600) ??? Is this an
architecture or board specific requirement ???

Appreciate it if some HW gurus out there has a good explanation how this
things work.
