Have you tried rebooting the laptop?

If you really want help give us more details: Which cables and adapters
used, OS on the laptop, terminal emulator program, etc.

Verify the physical layer - is the cable connection okay? You might try
connecting a modem cable to a modem and seeing if you can run 'at'
commands. That will verify your OS, the terminal emulator and the laptop
serial port.
