You can try with linux + bind + samba where :
1) the standard dns is bind whith dinamic registration of IP address
(search on internet for solution)
2) All the workstation can register it on the Samba server (open source),
then configure the samba server for resolve Netbios name and use the dns if
don't know. For more info www.samba.org

Subject: Dynamic DNS Solution for mixed Windows/Unix Environment
Hi Group,
A freind of mine has been assigned a responsibility to design a DNS
solution
using unix DNS server. He is concerned about the following:
1) dynamically map windows netbios names to their dynamically assigned ip
addresses.
2) Dynamically map unix hostnames to their dynamically assigned ip
addresses.
All unix and windows hosts will aquire their ip addresses from the DHCP
server, except for unix or windows servers.
Is there any solution for this?
I know that in a windows-only environment you can configure the DNS server
to use WINS server to dynamically map windows hosts to their ip addresses.
But this is a mix of unix and windows hosts and servers.
Any comments is highly appreciated.
Thanks
