OSPF virtual-link is a pseudo connection to area0,
whatever area0 authentication is configure, that same
authentication MUST be applied to the virtual-link.
Cisco's implementation will always show the
virtual-link as UP if there is layer 3 connectivity
between the respective routerIDs.
You will know there is something wrong, when you can't
see the virtual-linked routes in your routing table,
nor will you be able to ping them. Once authentication
is switched on then you will.
PS - If I coded it I would have force the virtual-link
to be in down status if the authentication is not
turned on, but probably because of many factors
Cisco's implementation does not decide to do this.
