NTP - configuring keys

I was running thru the NTP portion on section 19 of IPE and could not
get the NTP peers to sync to the master with this config:

ntp authentication-key 1 md5 011A1601431B031D35 7
ntp authenticate
ntp server 150.50.24.4 key 1

but when I remove key 1 from the ntp server and insert 'ntp trusted-key
1' it does sync.

CONFIG
ntp authentication-key 1 md5 011A1601431B031D35 7
ntp authenticate
ntp trusted-key 1
ntp server 150.50.24.4

Are these commands the same? What would keep the device from sync'ing? I
noticed that R2 did get the time from R4, it just was not sync'd.

(without trusted-key)
r2#sh ntp assoc

address ref clock st when poll reach delay offset disp
~150.50.24.4 127.127.7.1 8 7 64 0 33.6 320871 16000.
* master (synced), # master (unsynced), + selected, - candidate, ~
configured

(with trusted-key)
r2# sh ntp assoc

address ref clock st when poll reach delay offset disp
*~150.50.24.4 127.127.7.1 8 0 64 377 27.9 -1.23 0.1
* master (synced), # master (unsynced), + selected, - candidate, ~
configured
