RE: how to understand 3550's management vlan

This question seems to be asked a lot. With the assumption that you are
attaching a router to one of the 3550's ports, think of it like this:

To IP manage the 3550
1) the 3550 has to be connected to at least one router (just like a 5000)
2) the 3550 has to share a subnet with at least one router
3) the 3550 has to have an entry in its' IP routing table telling it how to
get to at least one router

Just like on a 5000, an IP address is associated with a VLAN that is
connected to the router. (There is a default VLAN of 1 on the 5000.)

Just like on a 5000, if the 3550 is not acting like a router, a default
route specifying the router interface connected to the 3550 has to be
specified.

The 3550 acts like a 5000 or 6000 with a routing module EXCEPT the 3550 does
not differentiate between accessing layer 2 and layer 3. There is not a
Catalyst OS and the IOS and therefor 2 configuration files. All of the
configuration is in a single file, there is one OS handling both.

Note --- if the 3550 is acting like a router, it is accessible and can be
managed from all attached routers that have an entry in its' routing
table.!!!

Subject: how to understand 3550's management vlan

hi all

we can clear understand and set management vlan in 4000/5000/6000 ,
    set interface sc0 vlan 1 ip address 135.2.1.1 255.255.255.0
    set ip route default 135.2.1.254

    or in 3548G
    int vlan 1
     ip address 135.2.1.1 255.255.255.0
     ip default-gateway 135.2.1.254

above we can see default route to understand which is manangement vlan ,
but how about in 3550, for every port can be a route port ?

reagrds!
