If the 3550 is just acting a switch then putting an IP adress on a VLAN
interface and assigning the default gateway are only so that you can
manage it remotly via telnet. On the 2924's, this used to through alot of
people off when they saw they could add routes and create VLAN interfaces
on the 2924's, they assumed there was some layer 3 funtionality. It is
just for telnet and SNMP. The 3550 can, however, act as a router.
