3550 and spanning-tree status BROKEN

I connected my 3550 to a 6509 yesterday (default port settings). What does status BROKEN mean? Or invalid port type? I tried messing with 'spanning-tree link-type' to no avail.

spanning-tree bpdufilter enable allows it to go into forwarding.
