A transit AS is one that allows prefix advvertisements from other AS's to
pass through it to other AS's. To be a transit AS an AS must be connected to
at least 2 different AS's. Let's say your AS is AS501 and AS501 is connected
to AS777 and AS999. AS777 originates and advertises prefix 45.0.0.0/8 to
AS501. AS501 in turn advertises prefix 45.0.0.0/8 to AS999 --- but in the
AS_PATH attribute of the advertisement AS501 is added because it passed
through AS501.
AS777 ----------------------------------- >
AS501 --------------------------------------- > AS999
prefix 45.0.0.0/8 prefix 45.0.0.0/8 prefix 45.0.0.0/8
AS_PATH= ^$ AS_PATH= ^777$ AS_PATH= ^501 777$
