I am quite sure that the problem wasn't due to the dialer-list on the
called side as it worked without changes to that. The debug dialer
commands showed that the primary was considered down, even when it was
up (due to the route in the routing table - please see the following).
I received a second really good piece of advice from adz
(ccie1day@totalise.co.uk) about the fact that the watched route was
using a /32. The watched route I am using is a loopback on the called
router. When I changed it to a /24 (as well as the corresponding
dialer watch-list) and added ip ospf network point-to-point, I was
able to use the dialer map statement for the watched route, and it worked.
Change on calling router:
dialer watch-list 8 ip 15.5.5.0 255.255.255.0
Change on called router:
interface Loopback2
ip address 15.5.5.5 255.255.255.0
ip ospf network point-to-point
end
Now the following dialer map can be used on BRI0:
dialer map ip 15.5.5.0 name router7-1750-2 broadcast 8358662
When the primary (S0) is down, the routing table is as follows:
router4-1750-1#sh ip route

When S0 comes up again, the route via S0 appears again. When the mask
was /32 for 15.5.5.5, the route never changed from directly connected to
BRI0, so BRI0 stayed up, thinking the primary was still down.
With the new mask, after S0 is up again:
