For the past 3 or 4 years, I've deducted all ccie and other certification
costs that weren't reimbursed by my employer or client. This has included
all technical books, training, subscriptions to technical/ industry
magazines, equipment, and cable modem service. You can also deduct travel
and lodging costs if those are necessary for the training. And, don't
forget the $300 for the written exam. All expenses related to your
professional development and maintence of your skills are deductable as long
as you haven't been reimbursed for these expenses.

the purchase was needed for a certification my company was requiring me to
attain. This is the case since my company wants me to get my CCIE. I had
to pay a little more to have an extra form filled out but it was well worth
it.
