John,
It is my understanding that CGMP can only be used if your using a
3550 interface in a none switchport fashion i.e. it's a routing
port and would connect to a legacy switch that would support CGMP.
ex:
interface FastEthernet0/10
no switchport
ip address 172.16.16.1 255.255.255.0
ip pim sparse-mode
ip cgmp

If you want to collect IGMP information for forwarding reasons then
you would use "ip igmp snooping" globally or per vlan.
