Good point.

I believe Dennis is pointing out that you can specify up to eight IP
addresses that the IP datagram must traverse, but it can also pass
through other routers in between the listed addresses. This would make
'loose source routing' a good candidate for an implementation of a
switch/option on a ping or traceroute command.
