I think it's a matter of personal preference. Attitude can be a part of
passing, but it is in the noise when compared with skill, knowledge, and
practice.
In today's environment with resources such as Groupstudy, pre-packaged
lab scenarios, bootcamps and rental racks I would tend to think the way
you do, assuming you avail yourself of those resources, study and practice.
When I began the CCIE quest, those resources didn't exist for the most part.
The CCIE path was filled with mystique and rumor. My first attempt was
more of a "see what it's like" type of thing, to essentially get a feel for
things. Sure, I hoped to pass. Instead, I got a quick and brutal lesson
in just how little I knew. This was the two-day format.
So, if the PMA of psyching yourself up to pass on the first try will help
you, great. If you're unsuccessful, don't give up. Climb back up on the
horse that bucked you off. At least you've got an (expensive) idea of
what you need to know.
