I noticed last year that Cisco removed the part numbers from their online
product catalog. I'm assuming this was an attempt to help the reseller
community but it really pissed me off as an end user by purposefully making
it harder for me to spec my own equipment.
Current Catalyst 6000 catalog page:

I believe Cisco's success is, in no small part, due to their contributions
in populating the industry with bright, well-rounded, educated network
engineers. A proof is easily found by comparing the information value of
Cisco's website to say, Lucent's.
The creation of the Cisco certification track was nothing short of pure
genius in that it created a multitude of Cisco-centric minded professionals.
This proved to be a win-win scenario (unless of course you're Nortel).
The removal of the part numbers, as small an subtle as is was, indicated to
me a compromise in the thus far outstanding dedication to the advancement of
the industry. So much so that I'm still irked by it.
