G729 uses 8Kbps, but when you add on the size of the IP header and layer 2
header this can be around 30Kbps which is what your getting.

If you were using compressed RTP you could get this down to about 11.2Kbps
total

The counters are over a time period of 5 mins (I think) I remember on a
course I was on we changed the timer down to 30 seconds to give us a better
average.

I got these figures from my CVoice course notes, other may have practical
knowledge of how they are in real life.
