In the 7200 series routers you can mix and match lots of neat LAN and WAN
interfaces, but the processor would not be able to handle the load if, say,
every slot had a gig e interface. So Cisco assigns each type of interface a
point value (a gig e interface uses hundreds of points), and you can use up
800 points per bus, and I think there are two buses. I have my printouts on
this at work, and I can't get to internet sites well right now-- there seems
to be a serious internet interruption.
The three built-in gig e ports really are wonderful, because they are
handled separately from the buses that handle the other interfaces.
