An idea is to use generic equipment listings.
Router 1 (2 WAN, 1 LAN)
Router 2 (2 WAN, 1 LAN, 1 ISDN)
Switch 1 (IOS)
The biggest problem is matching the home study rack to an idealized
equipment list. This is nothing new, but it will cause problems anyway
that we choose to implement it.
But maybe by having preferred topologies published in the future, it
will help people select equipment for their home labs.
Also I'm very interested in Jeff Kesemeyer's offer to use his topology
as a starting point for the UT compliant rack standardization.
I believe that the Online Rack Providers will match anything
studylabs.org comes up with. It's in their best interest to do so.

While I applaud the efforts of those willing
to donate finished labs, I think that the goal
should be to build new - original lab materials
that use a "universal" topology, not one that
is biased towards one rack vendor or another.
I would advocate a scalable "universal" design
using what is known of the actual CCIE R/S lab.
My suggestion would be to build to:

Dial Connectivity can be achieved using AUX
ports between routers in a back to back format.
Technologies such as ISDN, Voice, and ATM
which incur greater equipment cost per feature
can also be added.
Lab Designers can choose to use only a portion
of this equipment, or the full topology.
Lab Users would be able to acquire gear as
their budget allows, or rent as they need time.
