OT: Substituting Catalyst 2916M for 3550

I recently obtained a Cat 2916M with a WS-2914-XL-V card. While I know it
can not handle layer 3, I thought I could use it as a limited substitute for
the 3550. I was hoping to upgrade the image to 12.0(5)WC5a for some
additional functionality (QoS mapping, aux. Vlans, etc..), but it appears
this is not the case. According to CCO:

"No amount of software upgrades nor "memory upgrades" will allow the older 4
MB switches the newer functionality (memory on the XLs is NOT upgradeable).
With that in mind, a brief history of upgrades on the 2900XLs is in order...

The Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(8)SAx software was created for the
2900XL with the first shipment of the 4 MB switches. Improvements were made
on the original Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(8)SA in the Cisco IOS
Software Release 11.2(8)SA1, 11.2(8)SA2, and 11.2(8)SA3 software. Note that
additional features were included in an "Enterprise" version in addition to
the features found with the "Standard" version. All of these images were
only developed for the XL switches with 4 MB DRAM.... Important to note is
that Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(8)SA6 is the final version of software
for the 4 MB switches."

It looks like I am stuck with 11.2(8)SA6. As any successfully tried any sort
of work-around on the 2916 to accommodate 12.0(5)WC5a? Just curious...

Thanks in advance!
