From the testing that I did, you apply the distance command under the
routing protocol and it changes the AD of the route as it is learnt via that
protocol. Basically, and learned routes (from another router) being sent to
the router that has the distance command is what is truly modified (atleast
for Eigrp).
But with RIP, I've seen people just use the "distance 80" to change the
distance of the protocol as a whole.
