Martin,
You need to spend a few days browsing the Documentation CD:
http://www.cisco.com/univercd/home/home.htm
On the left, select "Catalyst Switches",. You need to become thoroughly
familiar with the Catalyst 3550. You should buy some rack-time somewhere
that has 3550s (e.g. www.bradshawlabs.com).
On the right, select "Cisco IOS Software" then "Release 12.1" then
"Configuration Guides and Command References." Each topic area usually has
one "_C" Configuration Guide section and one "_R" Command Reference section.
Browse the Configuration Guides.
Ignore "P2C" and "P3C" sections; apletalk, ipx, decnet, vines, etc. have
been removed from the lab. Also ignore "XC" Switching; the 3550 section
that you already convered is better. You're probably already pretty good
with "BC" bridging, FC Fundamentals (though there are some important
sub-topics under system management), "WC" WAN (Frame Relay, ATM), "DTC" Dial
ISDN, and "P1C" IP Routing (but be sure to refresh thoroughly on IP
services, ISIS, and multicast).
Areas that have particularly taken on added importance this year include
"MC" Multiservice (e.g. VoIP and VoFR), "SC" Secuity (particularly Traffic
Filtering, IPSEC and Encryption and IPSEC Options), and "QC" Quality of
Service. QC is the most important area for you to get up to speed on.
A good book on QOS is "IP Quality of Service" by Srinivas Vegesna ISBN
1578701163:
You should invest in some current scenarios (e.g. ipexpert.net) and practice
heavily on the current topics. With the deletion of IPX, IGRP, and Token
Ring, and the minimizing of DLSW+, new emphasis is being placed particularly
on IGP redistribution (perhaps on multiple routers), IP services, voice, and
*especially* QOS.
With only two months to prepare, you have a lot to study. Best of luck,
Kym
