Why would you want a 3550? This lab has a top-of-the-line, cutting-edge, all-purpose, no-frills Catalyst 2820 in it.
Why with a cat2820 you could... um, you could... ummm...
Actually, here are the only uses for the cat2820 I'm aware of:
1. Finally lets you put that null modem cable to use (A lot of them don't take an RJ45 console cable; you have to use a DB9 null modem cable to connect to them)
2. Lets you switch frames at a blistering 10 Mbps (The switch listed doesn't say if it includes any 100 mbps modules, so I'm assuming it doesn't)
3. It makes a swell doorstop.
4. You can create VLANs. W00t.
5. You can trunk VLANs using ISL (no dot1q for you) but good luck doing so without a fast ethernet module.
6. Don't forget, the cat2820 is one of the few pieces of equipment made by Cisco that has the ability to take up two rack mount spaces while providing little if any functionality! Let's see your 3550 do that!
7. You can use the Cat2820 to learn the near-extinct menu-driven interface.
8. If you have the enterprise firmware for the 2820, then you can also use it to learn the command line interface for the 1900/2800 series switches... an interface that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike the IOS that runs on more modern switches.
9. As if that isn't enough, you can also use the 2820 to not learn the set-based catOS commands!
10. And remember, you can always configure your 2820 to do the same thing mine does... sit on a shelf and collect dust.
