Wow, that's a service I haven't thought of in quite some time. Its heyday
was pre-Web, so good luck.

Basically HP Probe was a proprietary name-to-IP address resolution method
that was part of HP's NS (Network Services) transport. Kind of like a cross
between ARP and DNS. Like ARP, HP Probes were broadcast so a Probe Proxy
server was needed to reach non-local hosts over a routed network. The Probe
Proxy server was basically configured with a "hosts"-like file that mapped
names to remote IP addresses and responded to local Probes with the remote
IP address (kind of like proxy-ARP, but with static entries). I hope this
