Like most classes, how much you get out of them depends on both the instructor and the student. I teach some of the instructor-led Cisco online classes for Global Knowledge, and so can tell you a bit about them. They were developed by the same instructors who teach them in the classroom, they use the same manuals and the same slides, and are taught by the same people. We had to develop different hands-on labs for the Cisco classes than used in the classroom, because you do the labs when it's convenient for you, not during class. The labs are done with real Cisco equipment, and you have an entire pod of equipment all to yourself. In most cases, the online classes have more labs than the classroom ones. The classes usually run 2 days a week, for 3 hours a day, for 3 weeks.

Global also has some Cisco courses that aren't "real-time" - they're prerecorded and are on CD and online. Is that what you were talking about? If so, I can also tell you a bit about them! They are kind-of like books, in that they present the material a page at a time. They're an improvement over books because they use alot of graphics and animations to illustrate the concepts. They also give you an option to listen to an instructor explain the material. The same instructors who teach the classroom versions of these courses recorded the E-Learning versions. I've looked at some of them, and have been very impressed by their quality.

I don't want to make this into a marketing deal, so email me offline if I can help you find any more information!

I used them for the IP Telephony certification. The courses were OK but not
great. There's a lot of chit-chat and the instructors try a bit too hard to
be cute or your "virtual" buddy. There is a fair bit of good information in
them (unfortunately there is a little bit of "bad" info, too) and they do
have the advantage over instructor-led courses of being accessible 24x7 for
six weeks. And, you can keep going over material you may not understand the
  first time.

Personally, I think they're most useful if you have a broad networking
background but are relatively ignorant of the particular subject the course
is teaching, as I was with the IP Tel. But, hey, the boss paid, I passed,
and who knows, I might not have without the training.

  Hope this helps,

  robert

Has anyone had any training with any of Global Knowledges E-Learning
  courses(Cisco related)?
If so, are you able to comment on how it compares to instructor based
  training
or if you found it beneficial? - thanks
