Seriously, I'd suggest any CCIE candidate subscribe to the NANOG
(info at www.nanog.org) list and/or the RIPE lists (www.ripe.net) to
get operational perspective. Also scan at least one middling-active
IETF working group mailing list (info at www.ietf.org) so you can see
the process and active discussion that goes into forming an RFC. Some
groups, like MPLS, are very high volume, but OSPF is reasonable, IDR
(the BGP list) is moderately active, etc. ISIS tends to be very
quiet, since there really are a very few key players.

While I've written any number of books and tutorials, I have to agree
that's mostly what I do, plus lab time, and sometimes private
correspondence with experts.
