(partitioned backbone) and the virtual links to connect them (pages
...250...). Note this is "only recommended as a temporary measure in
emergency situations or in the early stage of a large-scale network
deployment"...

You bet they CAN be discontiguos as long as they have
a vir link connecting the two discontiguos area 0
routers. Area 0 cannot simply be split into two
different areas.
