You might want to point out the fact that ISL is a Cisco proprietary
encapsulation, and as Scott said, Cisco is even moving away from it.
Furthermore, 802.1q is an industry standard, widely supported encapsulation
method. Does this customer have any plans to deploy IP Telephony on his/her
network? If the answer is yes, then you can point out that 802.1q is the
only option on many platforms for seperating voice and data VLANs on a
single cable to the phone.

Cisco (been discussed at Networkers for the last 2
years) has made no secret of the fact that they are
going entirely away from ISL. That's probably the
reason why you are only seeing dot1q for the 10G
interfaces. I would simply tell your customer that
Cisco is going entirely over to dot1q in the near
future. Also, for troubleshooting purposes it is
easier to know that every trunk is using the same
encap.. If all else fails, give the customer what he wants---he is paying
your check.
