Below is an email that I received from the president of IPExpert in responce
to a question I asked about their workbook upgrade policy.
I am posting as information for all of you - you draw your own conclusions.
I will make the standard disclaimer that I am not affiliated with IPexpert.
I, like many of you have bought their workbook:
Larry:
It has recently been brought to my attention that a number of people believe
that IPexpert should have made the 3.0 CCIE R&S workbook available at no
charge to anyone who had purchased an earlier version.
While you could easily argue that my opinion is biased, everything that
follows is 100% accurate. The policy of IPexpert has been and will continue
to be that simple updates and corrections will be posted free of charge.
The 3.0 workbook was not a simple update. We doubled the content, adding 18
chapters. The additional chapters include 17 multi-protocol labs. Each of
these labs will take six to eight hours to complete. 3.0 totals 243 pages.
If you attempted to purchase a single multi-protocol lab from one of our
competitors, the price could range from $50 - $125. Buying 12 of these labs
would cost a minimum of $600. Our entire book, 42 chapters plus lab tips,
retails for $475.
We have no control over changes that Cisco makes to the lab. When Cisco
announced the latest changes we realized that we would have to release a new
workbook. We could have made simple changes to coincide with Cisco. We
decided instead to create an improved product that would better prepare
engineers for the actual lab.
3.0 essentially represents two books in one package. The first 18 chapters
maintain the format of 2.1 (with corrections and updated material), while
the next 17 chapters offer new multi-protocol labs. If we offered the 17
multi-protocol labs in a separate book would anyone expect us to make it
available free as an "update"?
I hope this helps you understand our position. IPexpert is not a large
company, we are engineers just like all of you. I value your input. If
anyone has further questions or comments please send them to
sales@ipexpert.net.
Sincerely,
David A. Sloan
