Correction (was in limbo when typing the letter).
it should be bits not fields

"The first four bits is the priority and the rest of the bits are the vlanID."

The Cat 3550 is able to use a new format or so called the extended ID for the bridge.
In this extended ID, the bridge priority (which is previously 16 whole bits), are devided into 2
field. the fist four field is the priority and the rest of the field are the VlanID, this is to
support the new spanning tree specification RSTP and MSTP.

Howdy,
I copied the following off of CCO:

Configuring the switch priority of a VLAN.

For vlan-id, the range is 1 to 4094. Do not enter leading zeros.

For priority, the range is 0 to 61440 in increments of 4096; the default is
32768. The lower the number, the more likely the switch will be chosen as
the root switch.

Valid priority values are 4096, 8192, 12288, 16384, 20480, 24576, 28672,
32768, 36864, 40960, 45056, 49152, 53248, 57344, and 61440. All other values
are rejected.

Does this mean that any value that deviates from the figures above will not
be used? Why is the switch allowing me to configure a priority of 0 ? Thanks
in advance,
