This allows you to add an interface to OSPF. It saves time as you do not need to think about what the mask is for the interface. OSPF picks the mask up from the interface.

When you are doing your lab, if you can do things that you do not need to think about, it saves time and effort. You go into auto mode and bang the config in.

If you do put the mask in as well that is fine, your mask can match the interface or cover all the interfaces. If you can add interfaces specifically it helps when you have a multi routing protocol environment.

I hope this helps

Cheers Zeb..

1) Why configure OSPF in the following manner?

 network 10.1.1.1 0.0.0.0 area 1
 network 10.10.1.1 0.0.0.0 area 0

and not

 network 10.1.0.0 0.0.255.255 area 1
 network 10.10.0.0 0.0.255.255 area 0

2) They configure policy routing on all routers in the FR cloud. I did not see the need for it.

Thanks,

BD
