You will be able to do a lot with the 3524 that you can with the 3550. The features are similar (regards switching) some of the commnds are different, take span for example. However the key difference is that the 3550 will be running EMI software. I would expect that they would make use of this. You therefore have potentially a 28 port router in the middle of your network.

f you separate out the layer 2 and layer 3 functionality and practice the switching items on your equipment I suppose what you have is fine as is. I would however try to become aware of potential lab scenarios with the 3550 as a router and perhaps rent a rack for a day.
