Hi Folks,
I was playing around with 2 3500's this weekend (BTW: I am only concerned with
layer 2 configs which is very similar to layer 2 configs on the 3550) and ran
into some scenarios where things were working but I wasn't 100% sure if I had
configured it correctly. So heres what I did;
CAT1 is the VTP server and CAT2 is the VTP client. I created several vlans on
CAT1 and it propagated to CAT2. (vlan 55 thru vlan 66)
3640 Trunked to CAT1 using dot1q and CAT1 Trunked to CAT2 using dot1q. I have
changed the native vlan on both CAT to be vlan 55. On the Trunk to the 3640, I
sepcify that vlan 55 is the native vlan and I do the same on the 3640
sub-interface. I connect a pc to this switch, put that port in vlan 55 and am
able to ping to my entrie network.
From CAT2, I can also ping my entire network (vlan 55 interfaces on both CAT
is using IP from same subnet). I also setup a pc on CAT2, put that port in
vlan 55 and am able to ping out to the entire network. So everythings working
fine. My questions are:
1- Do I need to specify the native vlan on the Trunked ports between the 2
CAT's if using dot1q or this is only necessary when Trunking to a router using
dot1q ?
2- When Trunking between 2 CAT3550, does the native vlan has to be the same on
both CAT's ?
3- How do you make the entire switch to be the root switch ? I have seen
examples of using vlan numbers in the configuration but that means for that
particular vlan, this switch is the root. I need to make CAT1 the root for all
the VLANS (this CAT should be the root switch) ?
thanks in advance.
Jay
