This is an urban legend (see this link for more information:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/pending/credit.htm).

The telephone number listed will allow you to "opt-out" of allowing the
Credit Bureaus from sharing your public information (name, address,
telephone numbers) with other agencies for the purpose of advertising.
Requests for information regarding your personal credit status still
requires written requests from those wishing to see it, and is recorded on
your credit record as an access request (which you can see when requesting a
credit report from the different bureaus).

The law in question lists a July 1, 2001 deadline for all other financial
institutions (banks, other lenders, insurance companies, consumer credit
card issuers, etc.) to provide you with an opportunity to "Opt-Out" of
allowing them to circulate your personal information (name, address,
telephone numbers).

Thought you would want to know the other half of the story.

Mike

don't bother with "option #1" even though it refers to this email. I just
opted out, so it legit.

major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release
your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who
requests it. (currently you have to sign to release this info, no more!)
