This is somewhat dependent on the boot prom of the router. I bought a 2501
CiscoPro as well. I could upgrade to a certain level of IOS (which was not
what is needed for lab practices 10.3 i think it was) but beyond that level
I had to replace the boot proms so that the 2501 could recognize more then 4
megs of memory. Now it is as good as any other 2500 and is running 12.1
code.

So, if I remember correctly, to upgrade the pro to the latest IOS, you need
to buy the latest boot prom (supposedly free except for shipping from
Cisco...shipping can take forever, or a little money on E-bay and get it
much quicker), get the right amount of flash and dram, use the Cisco Router
Software Loader (it will set the right cookie to allow uploading later ios')
and upgrade to 12.x
