According to CCIE Power Session you should expect to be connected to a terminal server via telnet or serial port, it differs among the facilities. The option you suggested would work if you telnet to the terminal server, but if you're connected via serial port it won't work.

In a CCIE lab, you work on a workstation which links to a terminal router. The terminal router's async interface connetcts to all the other Cisco kits' console ports. You telnet to the terminal router first, and from there, you reverse telnet to any Cisco kit. So, why do you use Hyper-terminal? Even DOS command line is better.
