You can set the configuration register to 0x2101. Then reload and let it
come up in rxboot. After a while LMI will sync up and you'll have IP
connectivity over the serial interface. You won't have any dynamic
routing, so best to copy from a connected device or you'll need at least
a static gateway. Then you can initiate the TFTP either via console or
telnet.
If you're pulling the image from a router and not an attached server,
don't forget to enable the tftp-server functionality on the router from
which you'll be pulling the image. "tftp-server flash:[filename]" .
I haven't tried it with the semi-automatic procedure in a while. You
have a point with the TFTP timeout losing the race with the LMI, but he
should be able to work around this by:
config-register 0x2101
reload
(wait...)
ping to verify IP connectivity
copy tftp flash
config-register 0x2102
reload
If this fails, he can xmodem from the console port. Ugly but it works.
Don't try this remotely unless you're brave, careful, and feeling lucky.
