Peter,
The biggest difference is that the 3550 can be software upgraded from the SMI to the EMI image (assuming you purchased the legal license to do this of course ;-)
Where as the 2950 (from the Cisco documentation) says there is a physical hardware difference between the SMI and EMI versions of the 2950 switches. Hence you could NOT do a software upgrade but would have to purchase a whole new switch if you want to use the EMI image with the 2950 switch.
I should be getting a 2950-SMI switch in the next few weeks so I will be able to verify this fact then.
I have already verified in my Cisco classes that the 3550 can be upgraded from the SMI to the EMI image easily.

Subject: 3550 vs 2950
Guys
Apart from the L3 capabilities, are there any major differences between the
2950 and the 3550, Talking from a pure switching point of view.
IE: Do you configure vLAN, trunks, ether channel and STP in the same way? Do
you also add the management IP in the same way or is it different?
Thanks
